Ice Breaker Triathlon - W. Des Moines, IA

Jan 31, 2010
With this never ending winter...

we all need something to do! The 3rd annual Icebreaker Tri is a fundraiser for the Walnut Creek YMCA’s Partner with Youth campaign. Long time friend and all around good gal program director Britt German puts this indoor tri on each year with the help of her staff and a few volunteers. I always enjoy this little event because we all need something to do in the middle of a long, long winter!

This year’s format was a little different than past, lengthening the swim to 400 yards and shortening the run from 3 to 2 miles. This was done to minimize the back up on the treadmills, since a 3 mile run took too long and the waves behind had to wait to run.

The swim had two in a lane, and at about 150/400 yards I got a good snort of pool water which really through me off my stroke. I missed a flip turn and well, did not swim as well as I had hoped finishing in 5:29. They did not time transitions, so up to the bike and 8 miles on level 11 finishing in about 13:30 (ave. cadence 119), then hit the treadmill for the short run in 12:45. The only problem I experienced on the run was the old treadmill I was on would not go any faster than 6 minute miles. Oh well, probably cost me a few seconds, but in the end I finished 2nd place overall to a 22 year old swimmer/biker in about 31:30. Britt tells me there were around 75 participants and the event raised $3500 for Partner with Youth! Fun for a great cause!
